Best of 50+ Housing Honored at Symposium in New Orleans

Friendship Village of Shaumberg, near Chicago, was named the best large continuing care retirement community in NAHB's best in the 50+ Housing Awards competition.

An active adult community that offers a variety of activities in an amicable setting to foster healthy living, a two-story assisted living facility with many of the design elements of single-family living and a revamped continuing care community were among the innovative winners of NAHB’s 2008 Best of 50+ Housing Awards, the premier design and marketing competition for the 50+ housing industry

Sponsored by the 50+ Housing Council, winners were recognized for excellence in more than 50 categories covering all aspects of the 50+ housing industry, including community design, model merchandising and advertising and marketing efforts. The annual awards program was held last month at the Building for Boomers and Beyond: 50+ Housing Symposium in New Orleans.

“This year’s winners have gone the extra mile to give 50+ consumers exactly what they want: maintenance-free homes that incorporate universal design, green building techniques, well-designed floor plans and amenities that focus on learning, health and recreation,” said Joanne Theunissen, chair of the 50+ Housing Council and president of Howling Hammer Builders in central Michigan. “The entrants showed remarkable sensitivity to the needs and preferences of this dynamic, growing market.”

The Village at Deaton Creek near Atlanta, developed by Pulte Homes/Del Webb, won the gold award for large active adult community. Deaton Creek’s innovative approach to active adult living includes an open design and “Blue Ridge Mountain” theme that contributed to its overall award-winning qualities.

Grace House, nestled in Silver Spring, Md., won the gold award for assisted living residences for its departure from the institutional design found in many assisted living communities. It's two-story design evokes single-family residential design elements.

Some of the amenities at Grace House include onsite health care and a wellness center, spacious common areas that promote social interaction, and activities and access to nearby shopping and dining.

Friendship Village of Schaumburg, just outside of downtown Chicago, earned the gold award for large continuing care retirement communities for revitalizing ts 1950s-era design and a variety of living options for its residents. The contemporary design of this lakeside community unifies indoor and outdoor spaces.
