Rutenberg and Elliott Running for NAHB Vice President/Secretary

The NAHB Nominations Committee has certified Barry Rutenberg of Gainesville, Fla. and Marsha Elliott of Oak Brook, Ill. as candidates for NAHB vice president and secretary for 2009.

Barry Rutenberg is a third-generation builder-developer from Gainesville, Fla. who has invested a lifetime of leadership and service to NAHB, the Florida Home Builders Association, the Builders Association of North Central Florida and his community.

Widely recognized for tackling tough industry challenges, Barry is in his 15th consecutive year of service on the NAHB Executive Board; has served on 26 NAHB committees, councils, task forces and working groups; chaired the Single-Family Custom, Single-Family Production Builders, State & Local Government Affairs, Energy, Research and Resolutions committees; and served as moderator of the National Vice Presidents.

As chair of NAHB’s Building Materials Task Force, Barry led the fight to make lumber and other building materials more available, accessible and affordable, including testimony before a U.S. Senate Subcommittee, the International Trade Commission and the Canadian House of Commons.

A Senior Life Director, Life Spike (674 credits) and Capitol Club contributor to BUILD-PAC,  Barry’s honors include BANCF Builder of the Year (three times), Florida Builder of the Year, Professional Builder magazine’s Professional Achievement Award and the Florida Housing Hall of Fame. He is a past president of his state and local association.

Barry has built more than 1,000 homes and developed 12 communities, while earning a reputation for quality and customer satisfaction. Barry and his wife, Kris, are the proud parents of son David and daughter Lisa; and grandparents to Tyler. Lisa and her husband, Dale Kinsell, work in the family business. Barry’s long-term goal is to preserve building as a rewarding career for his family and yours.

After 30 years, 2,000 homes and dealing with the many challenges confronting our business, my deep passion for our industry remains unchanged. Home building is my vocation, our Association is my avocation and Family is my inspiration. Most NAHB members feel the same way, which is why we tough it out in the worst of times and thrive in the best of times. Thirty years ago, the hardest thing I did was build the house. Now, it’s the easiest.

Home Builders, Remodelers and Associates have played, and will continue to play, a vital role in our nation’s economy. NAHB is essential to maintaining our rightful place, and must continue to advocate for our members. Today, more than ever, it is critical that our Association remain relevant to our members, who want a strong, responsive, decisive NAHB that is laser-focused on their needs, interests and future.

Experienced, effective leadership has never been more important. Our members want someone like them to help navigate the risks and dramatically changing landscape we all face. For over two decades, I have dedicated myself to home builders associations at the local, state and national level.

Most know me as Marsha, someone who is approachable and listens, who builds relationships and alliances among our diverse membership, who seeks consensus and then works tirelessly to turn that consensus into tangible action of equal benefit 4 all our members.

I would be humbled and honored to serve NAHB as its next Vice President-Secretary.

Marsha gets it.
