Awards Recognize Smart Growth Development in Northeast Ohio

Six residential builders from the 11-county area of Northeast Ohio have won the Smart Growth Community Excellence Awards.

Established last year by the Smart Growth Education Foundation and the Smart Growth Coalition, the awards program is designed to recognize builders, developers and community organizations that follow smart growth principles in building single-family and multifamily housing and mixed-use developments in both urban and suburban locations.

The winners were chosen on the basis of site selection, land conservation, environmental sensitivity, use of infrastructure, housing choices, community character, transportation accessibility and overall design.

“Smart growth means land use planning that involves such issues as availability of land for housing, building to higher densities, reviewing and revising outdated zoning laws, preserving open space and environmentally sensitive areas and re-developing cities and older suburbs,” said R. J. “Buz” Buzogany, executive director of the Smart Growth Education Foundation.

The winning builders and developers were:

• Urban Setting, Mixed-Use Developments of less than 20 acres — New Village Corporation for its Fries and Schuele Block Development, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, which also was voted "Best of Show" winner

• Urban Setting, Multifamily Developments of 50 units or more — The Coral Company for The Courtyards of Severance Development in Cleveland Heights, Cuyahoga County; and City Architecture and Coffin Lakeside Ventures for the Quay 55 Development, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County

• Urban Setting, Multifamily Developments of less than 50 units — Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization for its EcoVillage Townhomes, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County

• Suburban Multifamily Developments of less than 50 units — Donald L. Barr and Company for The Crossings of Pond Brook, Reminderville, Summit County

• Development Proposals — The Homestead Group, Inc. for The Homestead, 162-unit development under construction, Aurora, Portage County. The landscape architect was Cawrse & Associates, Inc.

Also, the honorary designation of Smart Growth Precedent Setter for long-time smart growth development work was presented to Akron Mayor Donald L. Plusquellic and Bob Schmitt of Bob Schmitt Homes, Inc., North Ridgeville.
