Value of Youth Mentoring Program to Build, Retain Workforce Discussed at Builders’ Show

During an education session at the 2012 NAHB International Builders’ Show in Orlando, representatives of the Home Builders Institute’s (HBI) mentoring program, Construction-Coaching Opportunities to Reach Employment (C-CORE), will discuss the benefits of the program and how builders can get involved.

The session will be from 1:30-3:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, in West 313.

C-CORE coaches Peter Merrill, of Construction Dispute Resolution Services, and Beth Underwood of Tierra Antigua Realty, will discuss how mentoring can lead to a new generation of builders and help the industry grow.

They will offer pointers on starting and maintaining a successful mentoring program and discuss the benefits to organizations, local communities and the residential construction industry.

“This session about HBI C-CORE will provide a helpful tutorial about the benefits of mentoring and how to get started,” said Dennis Torbett, vice president for Workforce Training and Employment at HBI.

Attendees will learn:

  • Insights on the value of mentoring youths who show promise and tips for planning and implementing meaningful activities
  • Proven best practices for implementing an industry-sponsored mentoring program
  • How mentoring can lead to long-term worker recruitment and retention
