Builders’ Tip: Adding Weatherstripping Without Changing the Character of Old Doors

Cutting down on air infiltration in old houses without changing their character can be a challenge.

While an aluminum threshold with a vinyl seal will cut down on the air leaking under a front door, it also will certainly look out of place.

As shown in the accompanying drawing, here's a technique that retains the wood thresholds in old houses while still cutting down on air leaks:

  • First, trim the bottom of the door to leave a 3/8-inch gap between the door and the threshold.

  • Next, cut a half-inch by half-inch groove in the bottom of the door.

  • Then, secure a strip of EPDM rubber roof membrane in the groove. The strip is held in place by 2-inch screws run through a length of 12-gauge Romex wire. With the screws about four inches apart, the Romex acts as a clamp, spreading out the holding power of the screws.

  • Finally, trim the two protruding rubber strips so that they are each a half-inch long. They make an effective, inconspicuous — and easily replaceable — seal for the door that keeps in character with the house.
