A building expansion for St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

A new church facility constructed with pre-engineered panelized wood and a scissor truss roof system has garnered national honors for Bossart Builders of Flanders, N. J., from the NAHB National Commercial Builders Council.

Bossart was a 2011 Awards of Excellence winner for the project, an 8,100-square-foot addition to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Hopewell, N.J.

The addition included a 250-seat sanctuary; a fellowship hall equipped with a commercial kitchen, classrooms and meeting rooms; and a striking Gothic-style entry foyer — for less than $149 per square foot, or 20% below the local market price.

The project also added a new paved parking lot with professional landscaping, heated concrete sidewalks for easier snow and ice removal, and an exterior lighting package to enhance safety and security on the seven-acre site.

The Gothic design of the entryway was extended into the sanctuary, which now features extensive stonework behind the altar and at the front and rear of the worship space.

The church campus now also has a closed-circuit video and monitoring system and state-of-the art sound system designed to showcase the church’s extensive music program and choirs.

The new facility was also built to be much more energy-efficient, with Energy Star-rated heating, air-conditioning and lighting fixtures and fiber-cement siding on the exterior to reduce maintenance and enhance the R-30 and R-19 fiberglass insulation.

Each year, the NAHB Commercial Builders Council Awards of Excellence recognize achievements in design, market appeal, sustainability and overall success of newly built and renovated commercial projects ranging in size from less than 5,000 to more than 100,000 square feet.

Entries are submitted in eight categories: retail, commercial, institutional, medical, industrial, recreational, mixed-use and green building. Projects of similar size compete against each other.
