Green Building Practices Added to Residential Construction Academy Textbook Series

Home Builders Institute (HBI), the workforce development arm of NAHB, is introducing a new training resource, “Green Applications for Residential Construction.” Supplementing the Residential Construction Academy (RCA) series of textbooks and electronic teaching materials, the guidebook will provide an introduction to trade-specific green building practices.

“Today an increasing number of home owners are looking for ways to save on energy costs and reduce their impact on the environment and for skilled and trained residential construction workers to implement their vision” said Fred Humphreys, HBI’s president and chief executive officer.

“HBI introduced this new training supplement to ensure that our industry can meet the ever-growing demand for this important type of construction,” he said.

Like the other textbooks in the RCA Series, “Green Applications for Residential Construction” features an easy-to-follow format enabling readers to learn general green building principles that are matched directly to industry skill standards — in this case, the National Green Building Standard for single-family and multi-unit homes, site development and residential remodeling projects.

The publication includes trade-specific sections covering green job site practices for carpentry, plumbing, HVAC installation, electrical wiring and masonry that can be applied in the planning and execution phases of residential construction.

Based on national skill standards set by the residential construction industry, the RCA series is the result of a partnership between HBI and Delmar Cengage Learning.

The series guides learners through the development of essential workplace skills in carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, facilities maintenance and masonry. The goal of the textbooks is to develop a skilled, knowledgeable workforce able to meet the needs of the industry today and into the future. This is the only textbook series of its kind focusing exclusively on residential construction.
