NAHB Extends OSHA Alliance for Two More Years

Edwin Foulke, left, and Sandy Dunn sign the agreement to extend the NAHB-OSHA Alliance for another two years.

NAHB renewed its alliance with the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) at a ceremony held last week during NAHB’s Spring Board meeting in Washington, D.C. The alliance provides the residential construction industry with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety.

"NAHB is proud to be renewing the successful NAHB-OSHA Alliance as part of our commitment to improving construction safety in the home building industry," said Sandy Dunn, first vice president of NAHB and a home builder from Point Pleasant, W.Va. "The safety training materials and seminars that have been produced through this alliance, such as the ‘NAHB-OSHA Jobsite Safety Handbook,’ have already made a positive impact on employee safety."

Through the alliance, NAHB has worked with OSHA to develop printed materials and video resources on safety for residential builders and workers, launched a safety and health Web page on the OSHA site, and developed and implemented a training course for OSHA staff.

In addition, OSHA has participated in events such as the International Builders' Show and the 2004 NAHB State and Local Government Affairs Conference.

"OSHA and NAHB have done a great job helping the residential construction industry to protect employees through seminars, publications and workgroups," said Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., assistant secretary of labor for OSHA. "More than 800,000 industry professionals have been reached through OSHA's Residential Construction Industry Safety and Health Topics page, NAHB events and the OSHA and NAHB Web sites."

Prevent Construction-Related Falls

The “Fall Protection Video,” available through BuilderBooks.com, can be used to train workers — in both English and Spanish — how to safely perform some of the most hazardous jobs in home building.

The video demonstrates safe work practices and equipment use that meet Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requirements.
