Joint Compound Keeps Drywalling Dust Down

To help minimize the mess from drywall sanding, a new product from the U.S. Gypsum Corporation has been designed to reduce airborne dust.

Headquartered in Chicago, USG Corporation is a member of the National Council of the Housing Industry — The Supplier 100 of NAHB.

The manufacturer’s newly formulated SHEETROCK® brand dust control joint compound has a unique quality that binds dust particles together, creating a “heavy dust” that falls straight to the floor when the wall is sanded.

The joint compound, USG says, produces the same quality finish as other all-purpose muds, without the cloud of dust — making prep time and cleanup faster and easier. And the dust control properties of the product have been independently verified with Worker Industrial Hygiene Testing.

The ready-mix product is ideal for all types of remodeling products, according to the manufacturer, and it weighs up to 35% less than conventional compounds, making handling, application and sanding quick and simple.

“The mess associated with drywall has long been a concern to contractors and home owners alike, often times enough to deter taking on significant remodeling projects,” said Myron Ferguson, an authority on drywall and president of Ferguson Drywall Innovations. “USG’s new joint compound addresses that concern and effectively minimizes dust, making cleanup easier and more efficient.”

In addition, says USG, the material’s low shrinkage, excellent adhesion and resistance to cracks enable users to apply just two coats of compound when covering metal surfaces such as corner beads and fasteners. It bonds like a taping product for a tough, tight seal under most job site conditions.

The product is available at home improvement retailers, lumberyards and paint and decorating stores. It is packaged in a 3-1/2 gallon pail with a blue lid in the Eastern U.S.and a 3-1/2 gallon carton in the West.
