  Political Update
While there aren’t a lot of elections taking place in 2009, the ones that are taking place are going to be particularly important and exciting.

The Virginia Gubernatorial election will take place November 3, 2009.  The current Governor, Tim Kaine (D), is not eligible for reelection, due to term limits.

In Virginia, the first contested Democratic Gubernatorial primary took place June 9. State Senator Creigh Deeds beat out former DNC chair Terry McAuliffe and State Delegate Brian Moran for the nomination. The Republican nominee is Attorney General Bob McDonnell. His participation in this election will be the sixth consecutive Virginian gubernatorial election in which an Attorney General has run.

The outcome of this election has national implications. RNC Chair, Michael Steele has said that the election for governor of Virginia is one of the most important elections for the Republican Party. Current polls show McDonnell taking a narrow lead, but Deeds can still pull in from behind as he did in the Democratic primaries to take the win.

The other state to have Gubernatorial elections in 2009 is New Jersey, which had its primary elections on June 2. The Democratic nominee will be the incumbent, Jon Corzine. He beat out three other candidates in the Democratic primary for the chance to defend his position in the general elections. Corzine proved he is popular among Democratic voters, but is known to be much less popular with Republicans and Independent voters, which may hurt his chances at reelections.

The Republican nominee is former U.S. attorney Christopher Christie, who beat out two other candidates in the Republican primary. Christie has been running on a platform of fighting corruption. Currently, Christie is beating Corzine in the polls.

Another point to note about the New Jersey elections is that they will be the first to fill the newly created office of Lieutenant Governor.
