Hometown Democracy Update
After failing to make the ballot in 2004, 2006 and 2008, the Florida Hometown Democracy proposal will see the ballot in 2010 as Amendment 4.
If enacted, Hometown Democracy could deliver a devastating blow to the home building industry. Under this “vote on everything” initiative, technical planning changes would have to be voted on by the public – calling for costly elections for the thousands of changes.
In 2006, a local version of Hometown Democracy was adopted in St. Pete Beach, which has resulted in an economic collapse and numerous lawsuits at the taxpayers’ expense.
Floridians for Smarter Growth (FSG), a broad coalition of over 135 environmental, business, labor, planning and community groups have fought to oppose this initiative and keep it from appearing on the ballot, which will dramatically slow and complicate the planning process – something that will devastate the fragile economy as it is striving to make an economic recovery.
FSG is prepared to continue to fight the Florida Hometown Democracy initiative through a strong grassroots campaign.
