Montana Governor Schweitzer elected to lead WGA
Governor Brain Schweitzer of Montana recently took over as the chairman of the Western Governors’ Association (WGA). In his address at the close of the annual WGA meeting, Schweitzer expressed his intentions to keep energy and climate change as the top priorities of the association over the next year.

During the annual meeting, the governors proved their devotion to these priorities by adopting a policy resolution that called for several actions to foster development of clean energy resources and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Among the recommendations was the need for a long-term national investment to support research and deployment of clean energy technologies and infrastructure that will result in: near zero gas emissions from new coal-fired electricity generation in 10 years and from existing generation no later than 2030; increased energy from wind, solar, geothermal hydro and biomass resources; expansion and upgrade of the electricity transmission grid and storage capabilities; advanced vehicle battery technologies and practices; and next generation energy efficiency technologies and practices.
