Mortgage Finance Tops List of Concerns for Nation's Builders
State & Local Government Affairs, in cooperation with the Economics group, produces an annual Critical Issues Survey of our membership.  The survey is targeted to Executive Officers as they typically have the best gauge on issues important to their region.  The  are asked to rate over 90 issues on a scale of 1 to 5 – 1 being not critical, 5 being very critical.  This year’s results are indicative of the climate change, no fun intended, surrounding the homebuilding industry.

The Top 10 Issues from Jan. 2008 to June 2008 were:

  1. Mortgage Financing
  2. Development Costs
  3. Impact Fees
  4. Construction Financing
  5. Development Approval/Permitting Process
  6. Sprinkler Requirements
  7. Storm Water Management/permits
  8. Codes Regulation
  9. Builder Employer Healthcare Costs
  10. Public Attitude toward growth
  11. Availability of affordable housing
  12. Zoning

To put it in perspective, mortgage financing ranked 10 in the Sept. 06 to Oct. 07 survey.  Meantime, construction financing ranked 20th during that same time.  Today, as you can see it is 3rd.
