  Austin hosts 2007 SLGA Conference

Two-hundred-and-sixty-two attendees gathered in Austin, Texas Nov. 8-10  for the 2007 Annual NAHB State and Local Government Affairs Conference. This year’s conference featured a revamped design, including a two-track program of beginner and advanced sessions.

“This year’s SLGA Conference was the most productive to date.  I thought the new format (core and advanced courses) offered veterans and newcomers alike the information and resources to get the job done at the local level.  While networking with other 'political junkies' from around the country, I learned that we’re not in this fight alone.  We have tremendous resources and allies at the local, state and national levels”  said Rocco Fana, Jr., Executive Officer North Coast Building Industry Association.

Panels exploring issues such as immigration reform and green building were led by state HBA government relations experts with extensive experience.  In addition, peer to peer education on improving a government affairs program included real "how to" instruction on media relations, referendum campaigns and PAC management.

“Attending the SLGA Conference in Austin gave me a great overview of government affairs along with information regarding a few specific issues.  I would recommend attending the SLGA for the information as well as the opportunity to network with others from around the country” said Tim VanderLaan, Executive Director, Medina County HBA.

Additionally, this year’s conference offered more opportunities to network.  The SLGA Cyber Café premiered to rave reviews, and many attendees expressed their appreciation for having a refuge to check email, catch up on daily news, or to take a breather and grab afternoon sustainance.

Conference attendees did not miss out on Austin’s famed music scene.  Cedar Street Courtyard set the stage for a night of great music and valuable networking.
