NACo Annual Conference Illustrates the Power of Integrated Advocacy
This year's National Association of Counties (NACo) annual conference, held in Richmond, Va., showcased the power of an integrated advocacy approach. With several significant and far reaching policy resolutions under consideration, NAHB, in conjunction with many state and local HBAs, played a pivotal role in insuring a positive outcome for our members.

A resolution supporting Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.) bill that would transfer water and land authority from state to federal control was defeated thanks to the lobby effort by NAHB and state and local HBAs.  This win was most significant to our federal lobbyist as it allows the two organizations to continue working together on this very important issue.

The aforementioned success illustrates the far reaching depth of NAHB, due in large part to the efforts of many of the state & local associations reaching out to their local elected officials.

Besides taking a heavy role in NACo’s policy process, NAHB had several speaking engagements:

  • David Crowe, senior staff vice president for regulatory and housing policy, addressed the economic and development committee on grayfields and the role government can play to create incentives for infill development.
  • Emily English, green building program manager, spoke on a panel related to the "going green."
  • Brooke Ransom, director of industry relations, representing NAHB and the Real Estate Advocacy Group for States, sat on NACo’s Green Government Initiative Committee Meeting.

NACo represents 2,256 counties nationwide out of 3,066 — or 74% of counties in the U.S. and 82% of the population. NAHB is a member of NACo’s economic and development committee as well as has an agreement to host a NAHB/NACo Leadership Summit yearly that allows for a discussion of the issues affecting state leaders and home builders.
