NAHB State & Local Issues Fund Provides Assistance to HBAs
The State & Local Government Affairs Committee met on February 7 during the International Builders’ Show in Orlando. to consider several applications for funding assistance from the NAHB State & Local Issues Fund.

The purpose of the State & Local Issues Fund is to provide support to HBAs in order to successfully deal with a legislative, regulatory or ballot issue that has national significance (i.e. national implications beyond the HBA’s jurisdiction) or that is a common industry problem whose resolution could be precedent setting and might not succeed without financial support from NAHB. The Committee reviews applications three times per year in conjunction with scheduled meetings of the Board of Directors.

As a result of action at the spring meeting, State & Local Issues Fund assistance will be provided for:

  • Gold Coast Builders Association. The Gold Coast Builders Association requested, and received, funding for a multi-phased campaign that includes polling, grassroots outreach, and voter mobilization to defeat a super-majority ballot initiative.
  • Home Builders Association of Greater Austin. The Home Builders Association of Greater Austin requested and received funding to finance a poll exploring the thinking and response to messaging by representatives from the general public in order to provide invaluable information about the potential market perception of the industry
  • Florida Home Builders Association The Florida Home Builders Association applied for and will be receiving funding to oppose a Constitutional Amendment proposal called Hometown Democracy that is due for the 2008 ballot and would severely limit future development and construction in Florida.
  •  NAHB Staff Request NAHB Green Building staff requested funding to commission a cost study; and a cost comparison of building a LEED-H certified home versus building one to NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines thresholds. This project would be carried out by the NAHB Research Center.
