HBA Government Affairs and Smart Growth Programs to be Honored
A record number of state and local home builder associations applied for recognition from the 15th Annual State & Local Government Affairs Recognition Awards program.

Congratulations go out to the 2005 government affairs and smart growth program honorees:

Idaho Builders Contractors Association, for its legislative efforts, which led to the enactment of the “Idaho State Contractors Registration Act” and the creation of a state contractors board.

BIA of Greater LA/Ventura Chapter, whose “Housing for All: Fair Share Program,” successfully fought back a mandatory inclusionary zoning ordinance by providing an alternative plan, including various permitting incentives to home buiders, to encourage workforce housing construction.

Oregon Home Builders Association, for its successful efforts enacting Senate Bill 574, which allows a home builder to limit its warranty exposure through a contract that is binding on every owner of a home for the entire statute of repose.

HBA of Greater Dallas, which defeated City of Frisco charter amendments successfully upholding key elements of Texas’s “right to repair” statute for area home builders and residents.

Texas Association of Builders, for developing a successful state storm water compliance training program.

BIA of Baldy View Chapter, whose innovative multi-pronged public affairs program reduced development impact fees.

Greater Atlanta HBA, for mobilizing its grassroots and building coalitions to defeat an onerous proposal regulating one-for-one teardowns.

Florida HBA, whose innovative Disaster Contractors Network, linking builder and construction organizations during emergencies, was applauded by President George W. Bush.

HBA of South Carolina, for its successful legislative efforts to cut the state’s statute of repose from 13 years to eight.

MBA of King and Snohomish Counties, which was instrumental in facilitating a communications plan between county officials that led to the construction of the Brightwater Sewage Treatment Plant, the first plant of its kind in King or Snohomish counties in 40 years.

Builders Association of South Florida, for securing a reversal of an extremely burdensome county ethics commission decision.

California BIA, whose dogged efforts led the state Building Standards Commission to rescind an earlier decision to use the National Fire Protection Association code.

HBA of Maryland, for its innovative smart growth program that analyzed land inventory and development capacity.

MBA of King and Snohomish Counties, whose smart growth program helped pass an ordinance that allows property owners to reconfigure odd shaped lots into usable housing property.

Award winners will be recognized at a breakfast, held in Orlando in conjunction with the International Builders' Show, on January 11.  For more information about the awards or the breakfast, email Gerry Keegan in NAHB’s State & Local Government Affairs department, or call him 800-368-5242 x8326.
