Mississippi Gov. Barbour Addresses Conference Attendees in Biloxi
Two days after the historic election last month, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour addressed hundreds of building industry professionals at NAHB's annual State & Local Government Affairs Conference.
 Two days after the historic election last month, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour addressed hundreds of building industry professionals at NAHB's annual State & Local Government Affairs Conference. Barbour's remarks helped kick off the industry's largest annual gathering of government affairs staffers, executive officers and building association leaders.
NAHB President Bobby Rayburn welcomed the governor and thanked him for his work to ease regulatory and legal barriers to homebuilding in Mississippi, calling him a “strong leader” and a “friend to the industry.”
Barbour, who served as chairman of the National Republican Party from 1993 – 1997, expressed gratitude to the home building industry and its advocates for boosting Mississippi's economy and keeping the country's economy strong.
Since taking office earlier this year, Governor Barbour has signed into law legislation adding Notice and Opportunity to Repair provisions to the state's Home Warranty Act. The amended act requires home owners to notify builders when a construction defect is discovered and give them the chance to repair it. The bill also adds mold damage to the state's list of warranty exclusions.
NAHB's State & Local Government Affairs Conference, held November 4-6 at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, was the 21st annual event of its kind. Attendees spent two days in breakout and group sessions exploring emerging and existing industry topics such as the 2004 election's impact on the home building industry, impact fees and how to maximize associations' government affairs efforts. Next year's conference will be held November 17-19, 2005 in Phoenix.
