Legislative Group Makes Workforce Housing a Priority
The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), an influential, bipartisan coalition of state legislators from across the country, formally adopted a model resolution supporting NAHB’s workforce housing initiative. The resolution was introduced by NAHB at ALEC’s annual meeting in Seattle and adopted as policy a month later.
The resolution reflects NAHB President Bobby Rayburn’s view on housing America’s working families, and the ALEC endorsement will give legislation and policies that promote this mission an important boost.
The resolution addresses the regulatory barriers often imposed by state and local governments that prevent adequate and affordable housing in our local communities. It focuses specifically on housing America’s moderate income class near their workplace, and emphasizes the need to house people like teachers, firefighters and police officers.
The resolution also shows how regulation, even when it is well-intentioned, is often the greatest barrier to the supply of workforce housing.
