Remodelors Council Winter Board Meeting Roundup

Couldn’t make it to Orlando for the International Builders Show? Here is what you missed during the Remodelors Council meetings.

Business Associates Committee

Carroll Bogard, CGRA, of Pella will become the 2005 chair of the RC Business Associates Committee

The Committee reviewed the report “Promoting Membership in NAHB Remodelors Council is Good for Business”

The Committee agreed it would be better to test a program at a local level before creating nationally

The Committee voted to work with Houston and Portland Local Councils to develop an Associates marketing program

A working group will work on developing a program and means to test the effectiveness of the program by the spring board. The group includes:

Beverly Koehn (Koehn & Associates)
Laura Trotter (Frank-Lynn Associates)
Carroll Bogard, CGRA (Pella)
Kori Hasti (staff, Portland Remodelors Council)

CAPS Board of Directors

556 active CAPS graduates nationwide
56 classes held in 2004
284 graduates in 2004
834 people registered for the CAPS courses in 2004
Currently 41 classes on schedule for 2005; with 18 classes scheduled for National Designation Month in February

Greater Dallas

National Aging in Place Week for 2005 is Nov. 6-12

CGR Board of Directors

816 active CGR graduates nationwide
149 graduates in 2004
235 candidates took the PREP in 2004
1219 candidates are in the pipeline working toward the CGR designation

The top five HBA’s delivering the CGR courses in 2004 were…

BIA of Washington State
BIA of Virginia
HBA of Greater Houston
HBA of Greater Dallas

The Board devised a new plan for the PREP coupon; PREP Coupon Puzzle. Remodeling Show attendees will begin at the Council onsite area to start the puzzle. Attendees will visit the participating Strategic Partner Booths to collect puzzle pieces. The more pieces collected the high the value of the coupon for PREP

The Board approved to accept industry-related online courses for continuing education. A maximum of six hours may be completed via online courses

Education & Business Development

IBS Education Sessions

The Remodelors Council sponsored 15 education sessions at IBS

Financial Management Issues (FMI) Work Group (of the Business Management & IT Committee)

Alan Hanbury, CGR, CAPS is the appointed liaison for the Financial Management Issues (FMI) Working Group of the Business Management & IT Committee
The FMI Work Group produces or sponsors resources, publications, articles, etc. on financial & business management issues. Most of this content is focused toward helping builder members. The FMI Work Group plans to offer these resources to other member groups within NAHB
The FMI Working Group understands that remodelers may have different needs; Hanbury will serve as the liaison sharing information and ideas between the Working Group and the Education committee

The committee suggested two ideas:

Basic Remodeling Finance definitions pamphlet
Exit Strategies articles

Leadership Development

Appointment letters have gone out to the 2005 Remodelors Council Trustees
The Remodelors Council's history is now on the Remodelors Council members-only web site
Don Novak challenged everyone to bring someone new to the NAHB Spring Board Meeting
The committee approved of a candidate for the 2005 observer position (2007 Chair of RC)

Membership & Council Development

As of November 2004, the Council has 6,774 members compared to November 2003 when the Council had 6,174 members — an increase of 600 members. There are currently 150 active Remodelors Councils.

Four new councils formed in 2004:

Local # 4098 — BIA of Clark County, Vancouver, WA
Local # 1028 — HBA of Polk County, Lakeland FL
Local # 1455 — HBA of Greater Peoria – Peoria, IL
Local #3495 — Lake Norman HBA

Currently seven HBAs are interested in forming new local Remodelors Councils since the Fall Board Meeting

The winners of the 2004 Year Long Membership Contest were:

Large Councils — Local # 2433 BA of the Twin Cities with 38 new members
Medium Councils — Local # 1005 Collier County with 45 new members
Small Councils — Local # 4530 Greater Fort Worth HBA with 57 new members.

These councils were recognized and presented with awards during the annual Chairman’s Dinner at the International Builders Show on Jan. 14

CADRE Award

2005 CADRE applications are available
Pella is the exclusive award sponsor — Thank you, Pella!
Deadline for completed applications is Sept. 2

Remodelor of the Year Award

QR magazine continues to sponsor the Remodelor of the Year for 2005
All Remodelor of the Month applications will be included in the nomination pool for the Remodeler of the Year award
The Remodelors Council will have a general membership call for nominations for the Remodelor of the Year award. The deadline for applications is Sept. 2

Remodeling Hall of Fame Award

The Public Affairs Committee added weighted scores to the six categories in choosing the Hall of Fame Award

The 2005 May is National Remodeling Month campaign will focus on How and When to Hire a Professional Remodeler.

Be Part of the Excitement in 2006

Did you know that the International Builders' Show has more than 200 education programs and more than 90,000 attendees? Don’t miss out…be part of the excitement. NAHB's University of Housing is currently accepting applications for education programs for the 2006 IBS.

To apply for the 2006 International Builders’ Show, visit www.nahb.org. Under the Education section, click on the “submit a program proposal” link where you will be prompted to log in.

To be considered as a speaker for the 2006 IBS, you must complete the International Builders’ Show Education Program Application form in its entirety and submit it via the web. We will only accept proposals from this link. Please do not mail, hand write, type, or fax in your submissions. We will not be able to accept them.

Also, note the following important requirements:

You must be on email and the Internet to participate as an IBS speaker. All correspondence will be through email and the web.
Education Speakers who present at the IBS are NOT paid an honorarium and travel expenses are NOT reimbursed.
You must be available to speak any and all days of the convention. Wednesday - Saturday, Jan. 11-14, 2006 to be considered.
Completing and submitting this RFP DOES NOT guarantee you a speaking slot at the IBS.
