Total housing starts declined 13% in April to an annual rate of 458,000, led by a large 46% contraction in multifamily starts (to 90,000). However, single-family starts, which account for approximately 80% of total output, increased 3% from March to a seasonally adjusted 368,000. Building permits, a sign of future production, fell 3.13% in April to 494,000, seasonally adjusted.
