Housing starts rose 9.1 percent in June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.066 million while permits increased nearly 12 percent to a rate of 1.091 million. Both increases were fueled by large gains in multifamily output in the Northeast, the result of a change in New York City’s building code which prompted builders to starts construction on, and seek permits for condos and apartments a month earlier. Single-family starts and permits both contracted in June from the previous month.
