Multifamily Construction Lifts Total Housing Starts in October

Housing starts totaled 1.229 million units, seasonally adjusted, in October, 3 percent above September’s pace but 16 percent below the same period one year earlier. Multifamily output soared 44 percent in October to an annual rate of 345,000, following a weak September performance, while single-family starts continued to decline, falling 7 percent from September to 884,000. Total permits fell 7 percent in October 1.178 million with both the single and multifamily sectors contributing to the overall decline.
