A Word from the Chairman

The RAM Board of Governors met on April 14 at the NAHB Spring Board Meeting in Washington, DC. I am glad to report that the meeting resulted in a number of new initiatives with the goal of offering enhanced services to existing RAMs and recruiting new designees into our membership ranks.

RAM is now online at NAHB.org!  The RAM Online Chat Forum has been established to give you an area to discuss management issues with your colleagues, learn from each other and to network.  Simply click this link and start chatting today.  You must also be member of NAHB to access the online chat forum. I encourage you to take advantage of the new communications vehicle.

Remember that in addition to paying your annual dues, you must recertify every three years to maintain your RAM designation.  In order to do so, you must submit proof of continuing education units (CEU) to the University of Housing.  Like last year, NAHB has partnered with Multi-Housing World (MHW) to provide CEU opportunities to RAMs.  The MHW Conference will be held September 12-14 in San Diego, CA.  See the full article in this edition of Professional Management for more information.

Are you interested in attaining the Advanced RAM designation?  If so, contact the University of Housing and have your organization schedule one of the existing Advanced RAM Courses: Fair Housing and Legal Issues. The Finance Course is in the development stage and should be available in 2006. Once you’ve taken all three of the Advanced RAM courses, simply take an eight-hour course in each of the following topic areas:

  • Maintenance
    • Preventive Maintenance
    • Green Buildings
    • Electronic monitoring of elevators and heating units
  • Personnel Administration
    • Sexual Harassment
    • ADA
    • Employee Accommodations
  • New Technology
    • Hand Held devices for inspections
    • Remote monitoring
    • Web-based property management systems

Submit the course description and proof that you took the course (receipt, facilitator letter, etc.) to the University of Housing so that you can receive credit for the course, and before long, you’ll be well on you way to earning an even higher level of distinction within the property management industry.

The RAM Board of Governors will meet again for a day-long Strategic Planning Session on September 8, at the NAHB Fall Board Meeting in Reno, NV.  I personally invite any active RAMs to participate in this process.  If you are interested, please contact Courtenay Brown for further information.

Finally, as Chair of the RAM Board of Governors, I would like to hear your ideas and suggestions on how to continue to improve the RAM program and its membership benefits to meet your needs as a property manager.  I can be contacted via nameoke1@aol.com or by phone at 212-862-4844.
