EPA Launches Federal Partnership to Revitalize Urban Waterways

On June 23, the Environmental Protection Agency in conjunction with 11 federal agencies initiated the Urban Waters Federal Partnership (UWFP), which is dedicated to revitalizing urban waterways while boosting local economies and creating jobs.

Many of the waterways targeted by the program are used as major drinking water sources, as well as for recreation — such as swimming, fishing and boating.

This initiative will provide funding and technical assistance to underserved urban communities and assist in coordinating the planning and implementation of urban river cleanup and restoration. Additionally, all new infrastructure projects in these areas will be eligible for grants and technical assistance.

The seven pilot projects now underway include:

  • Patapsco Watershed (Maryland)
  • Anacostia Watershed (Washington, D.C./Maryland)
  • Bronx and Harlem River Watersheds (New York)
  • South Platte River in Denver
  • Los Angeles River Watershed
  • Lake Pontchartrain Area (New Orleans)
  • Northwest Indiana Area
