Advanced Green Courses at IBS Look at Making Green Projects More Cost-Effective

Builders and remodelers looking to make their green projects more streamlined and cost-efficient can learn ways to do so during two new advanced green building courses that will be held during the pre-show schedule before the start of the 2011 NAHB International Builders’ Show.

“The focus when developing the advanced green courses was to try and make the applications as practical as can be,” said John Barrows, CGB, CGP, GMB, of J. Barrows, Inc., a Hamptons, N.Y.-based custom builder and subject matter expert who helped develop the two courses, “Advanced Green Building: Building Science” and “Advanced Green Building: Project Management.”

“If green building is going to be successful, we need to find cost-effective methods of implementation. We have to find ways to create efficiencies. The ‘Building Science’ class helps you understand how to create efficiency from a construction standpoint. The ‘Project Management’ class shows how to create efficiencies in your procedures and systems,” he said.

The courses are required for the new Master Certified Green Professional (Master CGP) designation for builders and remodelers. Attendees can register for the advanced green courses at www.buildersshow.com.

  • Advanced Green Building: Building Science (Two-day course)
    Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 8-9
    9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. each day

Builders and remodelers will learn about proper building science techniques for constructing and remodeling high-performance homes — energy-efficient homes that are more durable, and environmentally responsible and provide a sustainable living environment.

By using case studies, detailed construction drawings and other resources found on GreenBuildingAdvisor.com, NAHB and BuildingGreen, LLC have developed the course to provide builders and remodelers with the highest-level information available.

Course graduates will be able to:
    • Apply building physics to building performance
    • Translate building science into elements of design and construction
    • Dovetail all features of high performance — energy efficiency, water efficiency, materials efficiency and indoor environmental quality
    • Describe the high-performance home and its benefits to clients and the project team
    • Use all aspects of GreenBuildingAdvisor.com, including “My GBA,” the site’s project management tool, on individual projects and with the project team

Builders and remodelers will learn how to successfully integrate green building-related tasks and the green home certification process into their project management to create an effective, streamlined process.

Using the whole-house approach to building, this course identifies important documents and methods of communication in order to clarify who does what tasks and when.

By completing the course, attendees will be able to:
    • Integrate green tasks into project management for a collaborative and more efficient approach toward meeting green standards
