"Indoors Out" on DIY
Episode: "Zen Den"
• Aug. 1, 10:00 a.m. EDT/PDT
Adam and Rockell are busy, on-the-go home owners near Charleston, S.C., and even though their life can be hectic, they long for a room where they can relax and unwind. Their house is small but their yard is large, so it makes sense to create a tranquil space outside where they can enjoy peace and quiet. Hosts Dean Marsico and Derek Stearns know exactly what to do — they create a beautiful "Zen den." They begin by incorporating the large, beautiful oak tree in the yard into the design by laying flagstone around it — purposely keeping the joints wide for natural plantings. Alongside the patio, they put down several tons of river rock and install exotic lush plants. Above the patio, Dean and Derek build a pergola with sheer hanging curtains for privacy. They then build triangular planter boxes into the base of each post. For atmosphere, they add outdoor lighting as well as a water feature made from an old millstone. Finally, comfortable furniture and plenty of candles turn this corner of the backyard into a perfectly private "Zen den."
Episode: "Rustic Outdoor Kitchen"
• Aug. 2, 11:00 a.m. EDT/PDT
• Aug. 2, 6:00 p.m. EDT/PDT
• Aug. 8, 10:00 a.m. EDT/PDT
Hosts Dean Marsico and Derek Stearns head to the outskirts of Nashville, Tenn., to add a rustic outdoor kitchen to the quiet, no-frills rural hideaway of country music star Trace Adkins. Adkins relishes rolling up his sleeves and working on his lakeside retreat, but his one-room getaway with a makeshift kitchen just isn't cutting it. That's where Dean and Derek come in. Using all-natural Tennessee flagstone, Tennessee fieldstone and Vermont soapstone, they create a rustic outdoor kitchen complete with a patio, retaining wall, dining area and fireplace. They also add a custom-built, rustic wooden dining table, fireside sofa and coffee table to create a kitchen worthy of the country legend.
"Rock Solid" on HGTV
Episode: "School Yard Bird Sanctuary"
• July 30, 4:30 p.m. EDT/PDT
Expert stone masons and hosts Dean Marsico and Derek Stearns pitch in to transform an elementary school lot into a bird sanctuary that includes a circular walkway and a sensory garden. They use high-end Copthorne pavers for the walkway and recycled cobblestones from the streets of Boston for the borders. With schoolchildren helping out, Dean and Derek give something back to their community.
Episode: "Granite Facade"
• Aug. 2, 4:30 p.m. EDT/PDT
Hosts Dean Marsico and Derek Stearns give a home a facelift with dramatic results. Using Weymouth granite and bluestone accents, they transform a home’s staid façade into an inviting entryway. The stone veneer is applied in a unique pattern to complement the design of the house. Sometimes all you need is a simple decorative solution to make a home stand out from the rest.
