“Our Designees of the Year exemplify the most esteemed qualities of our industry,” said Benjamin Graham, GMB, of The Graham Companies in Middleburg, Va., and chairman of the NAHB Education Committee. “They give to their communities through mentorship, influence and innovation. In everything they do, they elevate the image of NAHB’s designations and housing professionals. They are setting a tremendous example for the rest of us to follow.”

NAHB Education offers professional designation programs on topics ranging from green building and remodeling to sales and affordable housing to help those in the housing industry advance their professionalism and business knowledge.

Certified Active Adult Specialist in Housing (CAASH) of the Year

  • Larry Armstrong, CAASH, CAPS, CMP, CSP, MIRM, founder/principal of 50 Plus Community Marketing, Inc., a Denver-based feasibility, strategic sales and marketing, research and consulting firm.

A three-time trustee of the NAHB 50+ Housing Council, Armstrong was also the chairman of the Building for Boomers & Beyond: 50+ Housing Symposium committee for two terms. He founded the 50+ Housing Council at the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver and continually encourages his colleagues to earn the CAASH and other NAHB designations. Armstrong also has taught CAASH courses for HBAs across the country and mentors his students in the CAASH process.

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) of the Year

  • Emory Baldwin, AIA, CAPS, co-owner of ZAI, Inc., Seattle, an architectural firm, specializes in residential aging-in-place projects.

Baldwin has promoted the CAPS program to the American Institute of Architects and encourages his fellow architects and designers to get involved with aging-in-place design and earn the CAPS designation.

Certified Graduate Associate (CGA) of the Year

  • Lanny Tillery, CAPS, CGA, CGP, a contract senior account manager at Whirlpool Corporation, Benton, Ark.

Tillery has made it his personal mission to contact every CGA in Arkansas to encourage them with their designation efforts and has led the education effort in the state. Tillery is a Penny Spike and was named to the Arkansas Associates Hall of Fame in 2006.

Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) of the Year

  • Chuck Miller, CGB, CGP, CMP, CSP, GMB, MCSP, MIRM, president and CEO of Chuck Miller Construction, Inc., Hidden Springs, Idaho.

Miller uses his designations as marketing tools, highlighting and explaining the merits of each one on the “Meet the Builder” page of his Web site. He began serving on the education committee at the Building Contractors Association of Southwestern Idaho in 1998 and is currently a MIRM case study reviewer and has served as a subject matter expert on several course revisions.

Certified Green Professional (CGP) of the Year

Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) of the Year

  • Sherry Schwab, CAPS, CGR, president of HCS Construction Services, Bellevue, Wash.

Since earning her CGR in 1997, Schwab has included the designation on all of her company’s printed materials, in her e-mail signature and on the company Web site. She also includes it in every professional introduction and at every speaking event or presentation. Schwab is involved with NAHB at the national, state and local levels and continues to be active in increasing NAHB member designations — helping those in the pipeline to complete their requirements and promoting designations to her fellow remodelers.

Graduate Master Builder (GMB) of the Year

  • Steven Zbranek, CGB, CGP, GMB, owner of Zbranek Custom Homes, Austin, Texas.

The company’s staff includes three GMBs, six CGBs and six CGPs. Zbranek has promoted the NAHB Education designation program widely, penning articles for local publications and contacting members personally to encourage them to register for courses they need to complete their designations. He also encourages other company owners to put their employees through designation programs and assists new designees with marketing strategies.

Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCP) of the Year

  • Sandra McGougan, HCCP, a compliance specialist with the Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency (OHFA).

McGougan has been a speaker and panelist at several national conferences and is actively involved in hiring and training new specialists at OHFA.

Master Certified Sales Professional (Master CSP) of the Year

Member, Institute of Residential Marketing (MIRM) of the Year

  • Daniel Levitan, CAASH, CMP, CSP, MIRM, founder of Levitan & Associates, a real estate research, strategy and marketing services firm in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Levitan promotes NAHB Education designations at his many speaking engagements and through various social media outlets, including the Institute of Residential Marketing (IRM) and National Sales and Marketing Council (NSMC), Linkedin groups and his blog. Levitan is the longest standing continuously serving member of the IRM Admissions and Standards Committee and has mentored dozens of MIRM candidates and other designees.

Winners were selected by each designation’s respective board of governors based on the candidate’s successful promotion of a professional designation to consumers and members through innovative techniques, elevating the image of the designation in their community through charitable work or community projects, and participation in mentoring activities focused on helping others start or complete a professional designation.
