A memorial fund honoring Britney Gengel, center, daughter of Massachusetts builder Len Gengel, was established to continue her work helping the children of Haiti after she died in the island's recent earthquake. | A special memorial fund to help the children of Haiti has been created following the tragic death of Britney Gengel, the 19-year-old daughter of home builder and 2002 Home Builders Association of Massachusetts President Len Gengel.
A Massachusetts native and sophomore at Florida's Lynn University, Britney had just arrived in Haiti on a relief mission with several other fellow students and faculty when the earthquake hit and reduced the Hotel Montana in Port Au Prince where they were staying to rubble.
Gengel and his wife, Cherylann, served as spokespeople for the parents of the missing Lynn University students after the earthquake struck. Adding to the excruciating ordeal that Britney's family suffered, erroneous reports initially indicated that she had been rescued and was safe and sound. Sadly, additional reports later revealed that she was killed in the earthquake.
Now, in the hope that Britney's efforts to help Haiti's children will continue as she would have wanted, a non-profit charitable organization has been established in her honor — Britney Gengel's Poorest of the Poor Fund.
Len Gengel is the owner of C&S Builders in Rutland, Mass., and has been an NAHB member since 1991. He has served as president of both the Builders Association of Central Massachusetts and the Massachusetts HBA.
Amidst an outpouring of community support for Len and his wife, Cherylann, friends and colleagues at the state and local HBA are promoting the memorial fund and encouraging other NAHB members to consider making a contribution.
