Multifamily Education Looks at Forecast, Capital Markets

The multifamily economic forecast, how to market apartments and changes in capital markets are among the more than a dozen education sessions on topics relevant to multifamily housing featured during the 2010 International Builders’ Show next month.

All sessions will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The sessions include:

  • Economic Forecast and State of the Industry for Apartments and Condos
    Tuesday, Jan. 19
    1:30-3:00 p.m.
    North 259
Moderator: Charlie Brindell, president/CEO of Trammell Crow Residential. Panelists: Michael Costa, president/CEO of MacFarlane Costa Housing Partners; Jerry Durkin, CEO of Wood Partners; and Mark Tennison, executive vice president of Equity Residential

Bernard Markstein, NAHB’s vice president of forecasting and analysis, will explain the economic conditions impacting the apartment rental and condo markets and provide forecasts for the short- and long-term — including likely trends in starts, rents and prices. Following that, executives from the nation's leading development companies will share their perspectives on the current state of the industry, and how they're addressing challenges and positioning themselves to take advantage of opportunities that lie ahead. The session also includes a question-and-answer period.

  • Apartment Marketing 2010: What's Working in the Here and Now
    Tuesday, Jan. 19
    3:30-5:00 p.m.
    North 259
Panelists: Jennifer Nevitt Casey, CEO of Bravos Strategic Marketing, Inc., and Lori Snider, president of Creativity for Rent.

In this timely session, panelists will discuss what consumers want as they search for, find and procure apartments. Attendees will learn how to market to consumers and how to inspire them to stay once they begin renting.

  • The Capital Markets: Financing Outlook for Apartments and Condos
    Wednesday, Jan. 20
    1:30-3:00 p.m.
    North 259
Moderator, Lance Swank, CEO of The Sterling Group. Panelists: Margaret Allen, CEO/president of AGM Financial; Jeffrey S. Goldberg, partner at The Milestone Group; and Dave Nielsen, vice president of the condo division at Wells Fargo

The changes in the nation's capital markets have made it substantially more difficult to attract debt and equity for your deal — but there are still some sources available. This session will examine who those capital providers are, their terms and pricing and what types of deals they're most interested in.

In addition, the popular education series, “How to Get Started in Developing Apartments and Condos,” will be presented at IBS. Individual sessions explore feasibility, finance, design/build and marketing/management.
