Winning Remodeled Home Blends Grace, Beauty, Livability

While many remodeled homes that incorporate universal design features are generally designed and built to accommodate the anticipated needs of home owners as they age, some projects designed for residents who have mobility impairments need specific improvements.
Such was the case of a Los Angeles home that was remodeled by Brea, Calif. firm, Interior Design Details for an owner who suffered from a disease that led to significant mobility impairment. The home remodeled not only met her livability needs, but it does so with beauty, grace and style.
The home was one of four recipients of the 2008 Livable Communities Awards, sponsored by AARP and NAHB. Interior Design Details received the award in the Remodeler category.
AARP and NAHB are accepting entries for the third annual Livable Communities Awards, which honor forward-looking housing industry professionals who have designed, built or remodeled creative and unique homes and communities that improve the daily comfort, ease of use and safety of residents. The deadline for applications is July 23.
When designing the remodeling project, Interior Design Details took into account the owner’s circumstances, aesthetic preferences and her personality. The company wanted every change to the home to help make all aspects of the client’s life better.
Consequently, the home’s open floor plan features archways and wide doorways supplemented by sensor units and automation that make it easier to go from room to room.
The bathrooms are fitted with a range of features including an automated shower/bath powered by an energy-saving tankless water heater, toilet, sink and seating fixtures that allow for safe use. Slip-resistant interior floors, grab bars, lever door handles and dimmer switches add to the home owner’s overall sense of security and well-being, as well as that of her family.
All of these design details are included in a stylish manner with granite countertops, glass bricks inside the shower to enhance natural light and stone tiling.

The Livable Communities Awards this year have added new categories to recognize architects and planners for home and community design. The awards previously just recognized builders, remodelers and developers.
