Safety Award Winners to Be Honored at IBS

The winners of the third annual Safety Award For Excellence (SAFE) Awards will be announced at a ceremony on Jan. 21 at the Las Vegas Hilton during the 2009 International Builders’ Show.

The SAFE awards honor the achievements of builders and trade contractors who have developed and implemented high-quality construction safety programs, as well as those government officials who have made successful efforts to advance safety in the home building industry.

The 2008 SAFE Award winners and finalists are:

Single-Family Builder Safety Program of the Year

11 to 100 home starts per year

  • Winner: Hobbs, Inc. — New Canaan, Conn.
  • Finalist: Gold Medallion Homes — Taylorsville, Utah


Greater than 100 but less than 500 home starts per year

  • Winner: Winchester Homes, Inc. — Bethesda, Md.
  • Finalists: Maracay Homes — Scottsdale, Ariz.; Trendmaker Homes — Houston


Greater than 500 home starts per year

  • Winner: Centex Homes — Dallas
  • Finalist: Taylor Morrison — Irvine, Calif.


Specialty Trade Contractor Safety Program of the Year

Less than 50 employees

  • Winner: County Line Framing (CLF) — Calimesa, Calif.


50 employees or more

  • Winner:  WestCor Companies — Las Vegas


Remodeler Safety Program of the Year

  • Winner: Kramer Enterprises, Inc. — Kalispell, Mont.
  • Finalist: Irons Brothers Construction, Inc — Shoreline, Wash.


Innovative Safety Program/Idea of the Year

  • Winner: Winchester Homes, Inc. — Bethesda, Md.
  • Finalists: Pardee Homes  Las Vegas; Safety First, Inc. — Englewood, Colo.; Sanford & Hawley, Inc. — Unionville, Conn.; Super Anchor Safety — Woodinville, Wash.; Tri County Truss — Burlington, Wash.


Light Commercial Contractor Safety Program of the Year

  • Winner: Bayview Construction Corporation — Stuart, Fla.


Home Builder Safety Professional of the Year

  • Winner: Rocky Cochran, Pardee Homes — Las Vegas
  • Finalists: Mark Hendricks, Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company — Federal Way, Wash.; Jeremy Bethancourt, LeBlanc Building Company, Inc. — Scottsdale, Ariz.


Associate Member Safety Program of the Year

  • Winner: Sanford and Hawley, Inc. — Unionville, Conn.
  • Finalist: Truss/Slater — Virden, Ill.


Federal and State Plan OSHA Official of the Year

  • Winner: Ernie Miller, Arizona Division of Occupational Safety & Health
  • Finalists: Mischelle Vanreusel, Maryland Occupational Safety and Health; Darrin James, Washington Division Occupational Safety and Health


Leadership in Construction

  • Winners: Bob Masterson, Ryland Homes — Calabasas, Calif.; Mike Thibodeaux — Wimberley, Texas

The third Annual Safety Awards For Excellence Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 4:30-6:00 p.m.

Ticket fees have been waived this year, but attendees must RSVP by e-mailing Lindsay Cather at NAHB or calling her at 800-368-5242 x8163 by this Friday, Jan. 16.

NAHB provides members and others in the residential construction industry — including non-English and limited English-speaking employees and trade contractors — with information, guidance and access to training resources to help them protect employees' health and safety.
