Superintendent Training Key to Reducing Construction Costs
To help superintendents realize cost savings in today’s tough housing market, Home Builders Institute (HBI) — the workforce development arm of NAHB — will offer its series of eight Residential Construction Superintendent (RCS) Designation courses at the 2009 International Builders’ Show (IBS) next month in Las Vegas.
As affordability becomes an increasingly important concern to prospective home buyers, members of the industry are faced with the challenge of reducing costs while ensuring top-quality construction. Work-site policies, procedures and practices are being revisited and streamlined, as a result.
Providing workers with the skills they need for optimal performance is essential in helping builders to realize cost-savings without sacrificing quality or customer service, according to experts on quality management in the home building industry. The RCS Designation enables superintendents to recognize and avoid common management errors that result in poor budget spending, scheduling, trade contractor management and customer/client interactions.
“The RCS training gives our construction supervisors a broader knowledge of the overall construction process and makes them better at what they do,” said Robert Clouse, senior area manager of Westfield Homes/A Standard Pacific Company in Tampa, Fla. “Encouraging our employees to further their education also builds loyalty to our company, which decreases turnover and increases productivity.”
The RCS Designation consists of eight half-day courses. All of them must be completed in order to earn the designation.
HBI will be offering two courses each day from Saturday, Jan. 17 through Tuesday, Jan. 20 as part of NAHB’s pre-show education lineup at IBS. Each course is $185 for NAHB members.
