Remodeling Courses Focus on Business Practices, Lead Paint

NAHB Remodelers is sponsoring 16 educational sessions at the 2009 International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas that will provide tips on how to improve business practices, estimating and scheduling; understanding the Environmental Protection Agency’s new lead paint rule; green remodeling; an assessment of the remodeling market, and more.

Tuesday, Jan. 20

  • Partnering for Successful Aging-In-Place Remodeling: AARP, NAHB and AOTA
    8:00-9:30 a.m.
    Las Vegas Convention Center, North 262 and 264
    Presenters: Carla A Chase EdD, ORT, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich.
    Michael O'Neil, AARP, Washington, D.C.

    Representatives from AARP, NAHB and AOTA (The American Occupational Therapy Association) will discuss the increasing desire and demand for accessible living to age in place and the resources each organization has to meet this need. The unique partnering arrangement between builders, remodelers and occupational therapists will be explored as it relates to outcomes for the aging-in-place client.

  • The Builders and Remodelers Guide to Mastering QuickBooks

    In this session, attendees will learn how to use the financial information about their business provided through QuickBooks to manage their company.

  • Making Finance Work

    Presenter: Kristin Mason, Carmel Financial, Carmel, Ind.

    This session will show remodelers the benefits of offering multiple payment options including cash, credit card and financing and will examine how to finance customers of every credit quality. In addition, attendees will learn about how remodelers can help clients find secondary financing for projects and how best to profit from this financing.

  • Draw Your Way to an Estimate: Getting Started with CAD-Assisted Estimating and BIM

    This session will demonstrate how highly-detailed working drawings, computer-aided design (CAD) and 3-D modeling can be leveraged to produce an error-free cost estimate and generate additional building information that can help create more accurate job estimates.

  • Understanding EPA’s New Lead Paint Rule

    This session will examine the EPA's Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting rule governing professional remodelers doing work in homes where there is lead-based paint, how the rule affects remodelers and how they can prepare for its implementation. The rule will take effect in April 2010.

  • The Paper Trail: Systems and Forms for a Successful Building Business

    This session will examine flowchart system business forms that will help remodelers master the six competencies of their business: sales and marketing, construction communication, estimating, production and safety, business management and financial management.
