NAHB Members Sought for 2009-10 ICC Code Committees
Nominations for NAHB representatives on the 2009-10 International Code Council Code Development Cycle committees and councils are now being accepted.
There are more than three dozen ICC committees and councils that oversee the development of ICC codes and standards, which serve as model building codes for 95% of states and localities around the nation.
Among these are the committees that consider the changes to the International Residential Code (IRC) and the International Building Code (IBC). NAHB representation on them is an integral part of the association’s involvement in the code development process.
NAHB representatives attend NAHB Provisions Oversight Group (POG) meetings, which are held at the National Housing Center in Washington, D.C. prior to each round of code hearings. Attendees review all proposed code changes and develop an NAHB position on them. NAHB covers travel expense for these meetings.
For the hearings themselves, code committee members are required to participate in pre-hearing conference calls, review the proposals assigned to them and attend the Code Development Hearings, which this year were held in Minneapolis and Palm Springs, Calif.
Depending on the code committee, traveling to and attending the hearings takes two to six days. Approved members travel at ICC’s expense when participating at these meetings.
