County Leaders Express Support for Housing Industry
County leaders from across the country, meeting with NAHB Senior Officers last week in Washington, D.C., expressed their support of the housing industry and pledged to work with the association on mutual issues that come before Congress.
NAHB President Sandy Dunn, First Vice President Joe Robson and Vice President/Secretary Bob Nielsen met with members of the National Association of Counties (NACo) during the sixth annual NAHB/NACo Leadership Summit on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
NACo represents 2,256 counties, or 74% of the 3,066 counties nationwide. In addition to holding the collective summit annually, NAHB is a member of NACo’s Economic & Development Committee and its Green Government Initiative.
During a discussion at the summit on the state of the housing industry and the overall economy, Dunn pointed out the difficult times facing home builders as well as the stimulus expected from the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008.
She also provided insight on the recent government takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and reminded the county leaders why a healthy housing economy is vital to the welfare and prosperity of counties nationwide.
Nielsen and Robson discussed how many counties are resorting to detrimental land use policies to address budgetary shortfalls resulting from the housing downturn. The said many of these policies will exacerbate the counties’ problems.
Other topics discussed at the summit included affordable housing, immigration and green building and global climate change.
