Project CRAFT Instructors Honored for Career Training

Two vocational instructors for the Home Builders Institute's Project CRAFT have received awards from HBI’s Workforce Training and Employment (WTE) Department in recognition of their achievements on behalf of adjudicated youths pursuing careers in the home building industry.

In a ceremony attended by HBI President and CEO Fred Humphreys, Raymond Guzman was honored with the WTE’s first Instructor of the Year Award. Along with the award, a check for $1,500 was presented to Guzman in his classroom at Pembroke Pines, Fla.

“That was really something,” Guzman said of receiving the award. “I had no idea that these people came down here to see me. Everybody at HBI and all of my coworkers did a great job of keeping me guessing right up until the presentation. I am very grateful and will treat my family to a nice little vacation.”

Selected from a group of Manager’s Choice Award recipients, Guzman was cited for his unparalleled commitment to HBI, his students and quality craft education.

Marty Grissom was honored with the first Rookie Instructor of the Year Award, which is open to qualified instructors who have been with HBI for 12 to 24 months.

Along with a check for $500, Grissom received the award in his classroom at the Project CRAFT training facility in Hartford, Conn., where is also project coordinator. Dennis Torbett and John Hattery, HBI’s vice president and director of the Workforce Training and Employment Department, respectively, presented the award.

“We have a pretty small shop here, but we have a lot of partners and have been able to impact the lives of many young people,” said Grissom. “This award is not just for me, but an indication of how hard everyone at CRAFT Hartford has worked; it truly is a team award.”

Grissom was recognized for his role in getting the new Project CRAFT Hartford off the ground and his exceptional dedication to training and placing students and promoting HBI as a leader in quality craft education.

Project CRAFT is a congressionally recognized model intervention program that trains and places adjudicated youths in residential construction industry jobs.

HBI currently operates seven Project CRAFT programs in Florida and Connecticut. HBI’s WTE Department — the home of Project CRAFT — also operates additional trades training programs for targeted populations in Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina.

Home Builders Institute Offers New Program to Teach English to Spanish Speakers

Sed de Saber™-Construction Edition is an easy-to-use, take-home learning tool created by Home Builders Institute (HBI) to improve job site communication, construction quality and safety by teaching English to Spanish-speaking workers, who make up 25% of today’s construction industry workforce.

Sponsored by Lowe’s Commercial Services, Sed de Saber™-Construction Edition was developed by a team of subject matter experts — including superintendents, craft skills experts, remodelers and builders — to ensure that its contents was relevant to today’s home building workforce. HBI also created a seventh book based entirely on the NAHB-OSHA Job Site Safety Handbook to address job site safety issues related to the language barrier.

Sed de Saber™-Construction Edition uses proven LeapFrog technology to allow learners to listen, record and play back their pronunciation of more than 500 vocabulary words and 340 phrases. Participants who practice 30 minutes each day will complete the program in about five months. Learning at home, on their own time, also eliminates scheduling conflicts.

NAHB members can purchase the learning system, all seven books and a skills assessment to chart progress for $395 per kit. The non-member price is $495. Order today at www.seddesaberconstruction.com or at www.lowesforpros.com.
