Macon Builder Robert Cleveland Dead at 71

Bob Cleveland | Robert "Bob" Cleveland, Sr., a former president of the Home Builders Association of Macon in Georgia, builder of thousands of single-family homes and apartments throughout the Southeast and co-founder of NAHB’s Multifamily Council, died on Tuesday, June 24. He was 71.
A graduate of the University of George where he was a scholarship football player, Cleveland became a home builder and developer in 1962 when he went to work for the Standard Development Corporation in Macon.
For the next 22 years, he was involved in the planning, development and construction of about 1,000 single-family homes and 2,500 apartments in communities in Georgia, Florida, Alabama and the Carolinas. During that time, he was also involved in the development and construction of office and commercial projects as well as the rehabilitation of historic buildings.
In 1973, Cleveland co-founded National Housing Management Services, a real estate management company that eventually managed more than 6,000 apartments in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Eleven years later, he founded Multi-Prop Services, Inc. where he developed single-family homes and commercial properties as well as managed apartments throughout the Southeast. His company also brokered numerous commercial real estate transactions across the country.
Cleveland was named the Tom Z. Standard Builder of the Year by the Macon Association of Home Builders in 1993. Five years later, he was elected to the Georgia Home Builders Hall of Fame.
Cleveland served on numerous committees at NAHB throughout his career, including the Executive Committee. He served on numerous organizations, associations and commissions related to the building industry. In addition to the Macon HBA, he was a member of the Home Builders Association of Georgia and the Home Builders Association of Middle Georgia.
Outside the federation, Cleveland served on the White House Commission on Small Business in 1995 and a commission that studied government consolidation for the city of Macon and Bibb County, Ga. He served on the Housing Committee for Substandard Housing for the city of Macon and on the Ocmulgee Land Trust in the Macon area. He also was a founding member of the National Council of HUD Managing Agents and a co-founder and the first president of Southeast Association of HUD Managing Agents.
Melding his dedication to the industry and his alma mater, Cleveland served on the Board of Advisors for the University of Georgia Housing and Demographics Research Center.
Cleveland is survived by his wife, Connie Cleveland; his sons and their wives, Bobby and Elizabeth Cleveland, Dr. Brett and Merryman Cleveland and Blair and Betsy Cleveland; two stepsons and their wives, Dr. Scott and Emily Robbins and Ross and Allison Robins; and six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
