HBI, Lowe’s Bring Sed de Saber to Hispanic Building Safety Fair

Home Builders Institute (HBI) joined partner Lowe’s Commercial Services on May 3 to participate in the first annual Construction Safety and Health Fair outside Charlotte, N.C.

Sponsored by the Hispanic Construction Association of the Carolinas (HCAC), the fair provided free Spanish language classes, workshops and consultations highlighting important safety related subjects such fall protection, scaffolding, electricity, excavation, power tools and safety for children.

Reaching beyond the construction industry, information was also provided on nutrition, parental care, vision, lifestyle and HIV testing.

HBI and Lowe’s were stationed at the Sed de Saber™-Construction Edition booth to tell attendees about the benefits of their English as a Second Language (ESL) training tool.

“The HCAC fair is a great place to promote Sed de Saber; it is well attended by our core audience and is family-oriented,” said Jeff Armstrong, director of sales support and commercial sales at Lowe's headquarters in Mooresville, N.C. “The beauty of Sed de Saber is that it’s a self-paced tool. Employees can take the kits home and learn along with their families.”

Sed de Saber — Construction Edition was developed specifically by HBI and Lowe’s to improve on-site safety and communication with the residential construction industry’s growing Hispanic workforce. Since it was launched  at the International Builders' Show (IBS) in 2007, HBI and  Lowe’s have worked together to market the training resource at events such as the health fair.

Sed de Saber-Construction Edition can be purchased at www.seddesaberconstruction.com and www.lowesforpros.com.

For more information, e-mail Maria McIntyre at HBI, or call her at 800-795-7955 x8912.

Home Builders Institute Offers New Program to Teach English to Spanish Speakers

Sed de Saber™-Construction Edition is an easy-to-use, take-home learning tool created by Home Builders Institute (HBI) to improve job site communication, construction quality and safety by teaching English to Spanish-speaking workers, who make up 25% of today’s construction industry workforce.

Sponsored by Lowe’s Commercial Services, Sed de Saber™-Construction Edition was developed by a team of subject matter experts — including superintendents, craft skills experts, remodelers and builders — to ensure that its contents was relevant to today’s home building workforce. HBI also created a seventh book based entirely on the NAHB-OSHA Job Site Safety Handbook to address job site safety issues related to the language barrier.

Sed de Saber™-Construction Edition uses proven LeapFrog technology to allow learners to listen, record and play back their pronunciation of more than 500 vocabulary words and 340 phrases. Participants who practice 30 minutes each day will complete the program in about five months. Learning at home, on their own time, also eliminates scheduling conflicts.

NAHB members can purchase the learning system, all seven books and a skills assessment to chart progress for $395 per kit. The non-member price is $495. Order today at www.seddesaberconstruction.com or at www.lowesforpros.com.
