Six HBAs Awarded Challenge/Build/Grow Grants

Six local and state home builders associations received matching grants of up to $5,000 through the National Housing Endowment’s 2008 Challenge/Build/Grow (CBG) matching funds initiative to bolster their education and labor shortage/worker training programs. The HBAs received nearly $25,000 in total funding.

“Building homes for the nation is too important a priority to neglect the education and training that will be needed to support the residential construction industry,” said Gary Garczynski, endowment chairman and 2002 NAHB president. “Through the Challenge/Build/Grow matching grant initiative as well as other grants, the endowment is answering the call by meeting the industry's long-term challenges with bold thinking and action.”

Three HBAs received grants for their education programs and three received grants for their labor shortage/worker training programs. They include:

Education

  • Antelope Valley Chapter of the Building Industry Association for its “Building Construction Technology” program

The HBA in Lancaster, Calif. was awarded $5,000 for its “Building Construction Technology” program, a joint program with the Antelope Valley Union High School District that will teach high school students how to design and build four stand-alone learning module homes. The program was created in order to offer students residential construction as a career path alternative to higher education.

  • Charlotte-DeSoto Building Industry Association for its “Future Builders of America Summer Camp” program

The Charlotte-DeSoto BIA in Port Charlotte, Fla. was awarded $3,100 for its “Future Builders of America Summer Camp,” a summer program of the Charlotte Technical Center Chapter of the Future Builders of America, to teach trade skills, professionalism, integrity, teamwork and leadership to residential construction students.

  • Pennsylvania Builders Association for its “Secondary Endorsed Trade Program”

The Pennsylvania state HBA headquartered in Lemoyne, Pa. was awarded $5,000 for its “Secondary Endorsed Trade Program,” an endorsement program that recognizes superior secondary school construction programs across the state in the hopes of attracting qualified students to those programs and to contribute to successful workforce development for the home building industry. The endorsements are based on national skill standards in residential construction.

Labor Shortage/Worker Training

  • Home Builders Association of Connecticut, Inc. for its “Workforce Development — CARE Packages”

The state HBA based in Salem, Conn. was awarded $4,000 for its “CARE packages” statewide workforce development outreach initiative that recruits builders to speak to middle and high school students about opportunities in residential construction. The grant will be used to develop career awareness kits to for builders so they have the educational tools necessary for their outreach and recruitment efforts.

  • North State Building Industry Foundation for its “Workforce Development” program

The North State Building Industry Foundation, an affiliate of the North State Building Industry Foundation based in Roseville, Calif., was awarded $5,000 to create, purchase and distribute residential construction industry recruiting materials to high school students, parents and educators as part of its "Workforce Development” program. The materials will be designed to encourage students to enroll in construction training classes and seek employment in the industry.

  • New York State Builders Association Research and Education Foundation for its “New York City Workforce Development Program”

The state HBA’s foundation in Albany, N.Y. was awarded $5,000 for the workforce development program created as a partnership between the Queens & Bronx Building Association and LaGuardia Community College. This program will provide classroom instruction and job-site training to promote a skilled residential building trades workforce in New York City. Most students will be displaced workers and people starting new careers.

Since Challenge/Build/Grow began in 2001, the endowment has awarded more than $165,000 to state and local associations nationwide to support local education, and land use and labor shortages/worker training initiatives and to help build new partnerships that the state and local levels.
