Gary Garczynski Inducted Into National Housing Hall of Fame

Gary Garczynski, center, 2002 NAHB president, was inducted into the National Housing Hall of Fame during cermonies presided over by 2008 NAHB President Sandy Dunn and Dale Stuard, 1988 NAHB president and 2008 vice chairman of the National Housing Center Board of Governors.

Virginia builder and developer Gary Garczynski was inducted into NAHB’s National Housing Hall of Fame on May 3 at the association’s board of directors meeting in Washington, D.C.

Garczynski, president of National Capital Land & Development, has been a member of NAHB for almost four decades, and served as its president in 2002. A nationally recognized expert on smart growth, he was the driving force behind the creation of NAHB’s smart growth policy. He was also one of the founding members of the Greater Washington Smart Growth Alliance.

Garczynski’s year as president of NAHB was marked by a commitment to education highlighted by the establishment of NAHB’s “University of Housing” and the launch of “Building Homes of Our Own,” a children’s learning program provided to educators nationwide on CD-ROM.

“Gary has dedicated much of his life to making a lasting contribution to the housing industry and to the consumers our industry serves,” said 2008 NAHB President Sandy Dunn. “He has provided tremendous leadership to this association and the home building industry, and we are proud to honor him.”

The National Housing Center Board of Governors selects the Hall of Fame honorees.

In his 40-year career, Garczynski has guided the construction of more than 6,000 homes in almost 60 communities in the greater Washington metro area. He served as president of the Northern Virginia Building Industry Association (NVBIA) in 1985 and as president of the Home Builders Association of Virginia (HBAV) in 1990.

In 2005, Garczynski was elected chairman of the National Housing Endowment (NHE), the philanthropic arm of NAHB. Since 1995, he has been a gubernatorial appointee to the Virginia Housing Study Commission, and from 1996 through 2000, he was president of the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance.

Garczynski serves on the board of directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta and he is a director of the Washington Airports Task Force. He has also served as president of the Joe Gibbs Youth for Tomorrow Boys and Girls Home in Bristow, Va., and is currently on its executive committee.

Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, Garczynski is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and its Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. He and his wife, Jane, live in Clifton, Va.
