Green Homes Tour Expanding in North Carolina

The newly formed Green Home Builders of the Triangle will welcome 33 builders and 40 homes — more than double the number at last year’s event — at the annual Green Home Tour May 3 and 4.

The green council is a joint project of the Home Builders Association of Durham, Orange and Chatham Counties and the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County in North Carolina.

Every tour home is enrolled in the green building certification program administered by the Triangle HBAs, which is based on the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines, and entries must meet at least the bronze level of certification.

Some of the homes on tour will be only partially complete so that attendees can see materials and techniques — such as advanced framing — that would otherwise be hidden behind the walls.

The tour has grown due to the increased interest in green building and the expansion of the green building program into Raleigh and Wake County, organizers said.

“Last year our tour entries were concentrated in the western side of the Triangle, but this year the event is truly Triangle-wide, covering six counties,” said Kevin Nelson, chairman of this year’s tour.

Tour homes vary widely in style, features and price — from a low of $72,500 for a home built by Habitat for Humanity of Orange County to a high of $3.25 million for an entry by Bost Homes in Youngsville.

“We are very excited about being in the Green Home Tour this year, because we’d like to show people that affordable homes can certainly be green,” said Tom Finn, construction coordinator for Orange Habitat. “Our goal is for every one of our Habitat homes to be energy-efficient and healthy, and the green building certification program and tour give us a chance to show that we’ve done what we intended.”
