Beazer Steps Up Energy-, Eco-Performance of Its Homes
Beazer Homes has announced that it is incorporating new energy efficiency, water efficiency and indoor environmental quality measures into each home it builds as another step towards bringing eco-friendly products, practices and awareness into the mainstream.
eSMART by Beazer Homes™ will combine high-performance products with green building practices to have an immediate impact on the home’s annual operating costs and at no additional cost to home buyers, the company announced.
Working with product manufacturers — including Honeywell, General Electric and Moen — eSMART homes will come equipped with programmable thermostats, compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) in the light fixtures, Energy Star-rated dishwashers, water-saving faucets and showerheads, more efficient air filters and carpets and paints that emit lower levels of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs.
“We are mapping our efforts toward the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines because they offer the flexibility a large national builder needs to achieve both efficiency and conservation goals across a variety of markets,” said Tony Callahan, senior vice president of purchasing, planning and design at Beazer Homes.
"Our goal is to provide affordable everyday solutions that can make a difference right now in terms of environmental impact and operating costs," Callahan added. The company estimates that consumers will save an average of $331 in annual energy and replacement costs over typical new homes.
About 66% of consumers polled by Beazer last month reported being more environmentally conscious than they were five years ago. When making a new-home purchase decision, they ranked the importance of energy-saving features — such as programmable thermostats and CFLs — on par with higher-end kitchen features.
Beazer Homes also served as principle sponsor of the Georgia Institute of Technology's entry into the 2007 Solar Decathlon, an international competition involving 20 universities designing, building, transporting and commissioning an 800-square foot, solar-powered house.
