President's Tour Looks at Manufacturers, Green Building

Log Home Council members visited several manufacturing facilities and learned more about green building and log homes during the President's Tour in Appleton, Wis. on April 6-8.

Log Homes Council (LHC) members toured several manufacturing facilities and a model home, honored members who helped advance the log home industry, learned more about NAHB’s green certification and green building programs and raised more than $5,000 for charity during the Log Homes Council President’s Tour in Appleton, Wis. earlier this month.

The three-day tour from April 6-8 included visits to Timber Valley Millwork, a wooden door manufacturer; the Expedition Log Homes, Golden Eagle Log Homes and Meadow Valley Log Homes manufacturing facilities; and a Strongwood Log Homes model home.

Members Honored

Two members were honored for their work on behalf of the industry — Rob Cantrell, the council president and president of Stonemill Log Homes in Knoxville, Tenn.; and Emad Faddoul, vice president of design and engineering at Gastineau Log Homes in New Bloomfield, Mo.

Cantrell, who is also chairman of the Building Systems Councils, received the Image Award for his efforts in furthering the scope of the Log Homes Council within NAHB. Faddoul, who served as chairman of the LHC technical committee, received the President’s Award.

Jim Murphy, vice president and chief operating officer of Meadow Valley Log Homes in Mauston, Wis., was elected as secretary to the Log Home Council.

In addition, the council’s charity auction raised more than $5,000 on behalf of Segs4Vets, a program launched by the Disability Rights Advocates for Technology (DRAFT) in 2005. The program provides Segway personal transporters to U.S. soldiers who lost limbs and sustained other disabling injuries while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Learning More About Green Building

During one of the green building education sessions at the tour, Don Carr, of the NAHB Research Center, explained the NAHB National Green Building Program and how it applies to the log homes industry.

Jerry Rouleau and Scott Stroud of J. Rouleau & Associates, LLC led a seminar focusing on Web site design and e-marketing strategies — tools members can use to increase interest and sales of log homes and to build a better dealer network.
