Bosco, Dry, Pence Named to Society of Honored Associates

Three associate members were inducted into NAHB’s Society of Honored Associates duding the International Builders' Show last month in recognition of their ongoing support and continued contributions and commitment to NAHB at the local, state and national levels.

Anthony Bosco, CAPS, of Hurd Windows and Doors in Freeland, Mich.; Karen Dry, of Garret Interiors in Westlake Village, Calif.; and Bob Pence, of Capital Wholesale Electric in Carson City, Nev. were inducted during the associate members' annual awards ceremony on Feb. 14 in Orlando.

Anthony Bosco

An active and involved associate member, Bosco has chaired the home show, membership, program and public relations committees at the local and state level with the Home Builders Association of Saginaw and Michigan Association of Home Builders. He also has been involved with long-range strategic planning, the parade of homes, associates council, building codes and planning and zoning, home show advertising, Habitat for Humanity and other state and local committees.

Bob Pence

Bosco was named Associate of the Year by the Saginaw HBA in 2001 and was a runner-up for the Michigan HBA Associate of the Year in 2002, 2003 and 2004. He received the Crestline Windows Achievers Club designation in 1999, the Hurd Windows President’s Award in 2004 and the Jaycees Outstanding Young Men of America Award in 1980 and 1981.

He has helped build more than 125 homes for Habitat for Humanity since 1986 and is listed in Who’s Who in Michigan, the Who’s Who in the Midwest and the Who’s Who in America.

“There is not a more visible and active associate member in our state association,” said Robert Filka, CEO of the Michigan HBA. “Tony is always upbeat, very involved and there to lend a hand in everything we do.”

Karen Dry

Dry is currently the vice chair of the NAHB Women’s Council and slated to become the council’s chair next year. She is a past chair of the women’s councils of the California Building Industry Association (CBIA) and the Building Industry Association of Southern California (BIASC). Under her leadership, the BIASC Women’s Council received the prestigious “Top Council” award from NAHB’s Woman’s Council for three consecutive years.

Dry has been an active member of BIASC, CBIA and NAHB remodelers, 50+ and commercial committees and councils since 2002. She has also earned numerous industry awards, including being named the NAHB Woman’s Counci Member of the Year and the Number One Spikette of the Nation from 2005 to 2007, presented to the NAHB Woman’s Council’s top recruiter. In 2005, she was named Associate of the Year by the BIASC.

Dry recently served as a guest editor for Tara-Nicholle Nelson's newly-published book, “Trillion Dollar Woman: Use Your Power to Make Buying and Remodeling Decisions,” available through BuilderBooks.com. She is also an active volunteer in her community.

Dry mentors children in several correctional centers and frequently at high schools speaks on careers in the home building industry. She is the design chair of the YMCA Children’s Center, Agoura and the Wellness Community Design Showcase in the Lake Sherwood Country Club community in Thousand Oaks. Dry also serves on the board of the California Wildlife Center.

“Karen is a great volunteer. Involvement and follow-through are her trademarks,” said Robert Rivinius, CEO of the California BIA. “She is an ‘initiator’ who is always creating ideas to add value to membership. More importantly, she makes sure she stays with an idea until it has succeeded.”

Bob Pence

Pence has chaired the associates, membership and forecast dinner committees of the Builders Association of Western Nevada. He also was president of the HBA’s Spike Club for the past eight years. He was twice named his state’s Associate of the Year, in 2004 and 2006.

At the national level, Pence chairs the Associates Get Connected workshop and the communication and recognition subcommittee of NAHB’s Associates Member Committee. He is an active member of the associate advisory council and NAHB Remodelers.

Pence volunteers with the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and has contributed to the building industry’s scholarship program for Western Nevada College in Carson City. He also is a member of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, Nevada State Railroad Museum Board of Directors and Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce.

“Bob is the epitome of an associate member. He buries himself in events, committees and association involvement. His level of dedication serves as a model for others,” said Rick DeMar, EO of the Western Nevada HBA. “On the strength of Bob’s encouragement, our association has remained innovative by creating a remodelers council and a woman’s council in recent years.”

The NAHB Society of Honored Associates was established in 1983 to recognize associate members who have distinguished themselves by outstanding contributions at the local, state and national levels to the home building industry and the association.
