Robert Holmes, Leading California Contractor, Dies at 86
Robert M. Holmes, a prominent Southern California contractor for more than 50 years and past president of the California Building Industry Association (CBIA) and the Pacific Coast Builders Conference, died in his San Marino home on Dec. 3. He was 86.
Holmes worked for Whittier, Calif.-based Oltmans Construction Co. for 45 years, serving as the company’s president, chief operating officer, chairman of the board and chairman emeritus.
While there, he helped bring the company to prominence in the Los Angeles basin. Oltmans Construction frequently ranked among the top 20 commercial and industrial general contractors based in Los Angeles County and was among the nation’s top 200 contractors during his tenure with the company.
Holmes was named the CBIA “Builder of the Year” in 1971 and was elected a lifetime delegate of the association that year, as well. He served as the association’s president from 1976 to 1977.
Holmes was also a life director at NAHB.
Holmes helped raise funds for the City of Hope for more than a decade and was president of its Construction Industries Alliance. He received the City of Hope's "Spirit of Life" award in 1979 and was honored as "Man of the Year" by the alliance.
A World War II veteran, Holmes served in the U.S. Navy with the SeaBees in the South Pacific.
Holmes is survived by his wife, Joanne; son, Steven; and four grandchildren. Cristin, a daughter, is deceased.
