SEBC Going Green in Orlando This Week

A record 1,100 exhibitors will be on hand at the 29th annual Southeast Building Conference (SEBC) at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando this week. The exhibit floor will be open Thursday through Saturday.

Thanks to a partnership between the Florida Green Building Coalition and the Florida Home Builders Association, which is the sponsor of SEBC, the trade show is going green for the first time in its history.

In addition to a Green Trends section with 45 exhibits, green building certification courses will provide details on the green home certification process and standards and how to become a Florida Green Home Certifying Agent. Top green speakers include Green Builder Magazine contributing editor Sara Lamia, who will present “New Construction Bootcamp: How to Sell and Support.” Other seminars are “Green Building for Building Professionals” and “Cost-Effective Techniques for High Performance Housing.”

SEBC Opening Ceremonies will feature keynote speaker Chris Gardner, the CEO of Gardner Rich LLC, an institutional brokerage firm specializing in the execution of debt, equity and derivative products transactions. His rags-to-riches autobiography provides the basis for the blockbuster movie “The Pursuit of Happiness,” in which he was portrayed by Will Smith.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist will speak at a “Leaders Advantage” program on Wednesday sponsored by Countrywide, and NAHB First Vice President Sandy Dunn will address a legislative update program on Saturday morning.

SEBC attendees will be able to tour the New Southern Home, which is being presented by James M. Krantz Construction Corporation. The two-story, 10,200-square-foot Southern cottage meets green standards. Although the history of the Shingle-style house is founded in the New England coastline, much of the inspiration for this home came from the builder’s roots in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.

More than 65 educational programs will be presented at the show, most of which meet continuing education requirements for Florida contractors. Among them:

  • On Thursday, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Liza Bowles, Newport Partners LLC; Brade Face, PulseSwitch; and Barry Reid, Georgia-Pacific Corporation will discuss the recently completed 2,000-square-foot Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) Concept Home, which features more than 60 innovations that come together in an innovative design that is both sustainable and affordable.

  • On Thursday, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., in “Beyond Sun City: Exciting New 50+ Designs for Home and Community,” architect Mike Kephart and Chris Grady, of Kephart Community, Planning, Architecture will explain how to capture a share of the 50+ market with winning community techniques that provide service-enriched communities and lifestyles that speak to this sophisticated consumer group.

  • On Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, Donald Evans, of The Evans Group, will discuss the latest trends that separate successful design from the mediocre.

  • On Friday, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., “Successful Real Estate Branding from Conception to Market” will review the four major topics that make up the essentials of a successful real estate marketing campaign — the key elements in marketing analysis; the steps to creating a successful brand campaign; how to effectively use models and sales centers to portray the brand; and implementing a sales coaching program to support the brand. The program will be presented by a panel of experts in real estate marketing, including Tim Hamby, president of Renaissance Creative; Rita Williams, president of Merchandising Plus, Inc.;  David Parker, president of Parker Associates; and Ed Bondi, co-creative director and partner at Renaissance Creative.
