Women’s Council Scholarship Winners Announced

Three women pursuing careers in residential construction are the recipients of the 2007-2008 NAHB Women’s Council/National Housing Endowment “Strategies for Success” Scholarship. The National Housing Endowment is the philanthropic arm of NAHB.

The scholarship winners are:

  • AnaLisa Alvarado, a sophomore majoring in industrial technology at Texas State University-San Marcos. She was awarded $1,000.

  • Maria Krawczak, a junior majoring in construction management at Northern Michigan University. She was awarded $1,000.

  • Sarah Swokera, a junior majoring in construction management at Illinois State University. She was awarded $500.

“Members of a new generation of brilliant, motivated and success-driven women are entering our industry every single day,” said Diane Willenbring, chair of the NAHB Women’s Council. “Once again, we were overwhelmed by the volume of quality applicants, and the decisions to award scholarships are getting increasingly more difficult every year.”

“Congratulations to AnaLisa, Maria and Sarah,” said Willenbring. ”They will represent our industry well, as will all the young women who applied this year.”

The scholarship selection committee included Roberta Colmer, Women’s Council past president, Calabasas, Calif.; Sheri Mitcheltree, Women’s Council vice chair, Fresno, Calif.; and Tracy Hensler, of the endowment.

Established in 2001, the NAHB Women’s Council/National Housing Endowment “Strategies for Success” Scholarship provides financial support to students pursuing housing or housing-related careers. The scholarship is funded by NAHB and Women’s Council members, and by corporate donors.

The scholarship is also being funded through a generous donation by William and Carole Hauke, who were named founding advocates of the endowment earlier this year and committed their entire donation to endowment to the “Strategies for Success” scholarship fund. Hauke, the president of Hauke Building Supply in Colchester, Vt., is a life director at NAHB and on the board of the National Commercial Builders Council.

Endowment Scholarship Programs

The endowment administers 12 scholarship programs and awards more than $300,000 each year to students pursuing careers in residential construction and related fields.
