Walter Carrington, Innovative Austin Builder, Dies at 82

Walter Carrington

Longtime Austin, Texas home builder Walter Carrington, a former president of the Home Builders Association of Greater Austin and life director at NAHB, died Monday, April 30. He was 82.

A home builder for more than five decades, Carrington built thousands of homes in the Austin area and brought many home innovations to the Austin market — including “garden kitchens” with patio doors and plenty of windows and light. He was also one of the first builders to install modern home air conditioning in new Austin homes.

"He was known for his innovations and design in building, but his real trademark was his enthusiasm," said his son, Trey Carrington.

Carrington, a graduate of the University of Texas, was named Austin’s Most Worthy Citizen by the Austin Board of Realtors® in 1972. Carrington was active on the Austin Parade of Homes for a number of years. He closed his business in 1995.

Carrington is survived by his sons, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
