Lower Dues, Board Representation for Affiliate Members
NAHB has lowered dues for affiliates and given affiliates a new voice in the association by creating an affiliate representative position on the NAHB Board of Directors in an effort to raise the status and visibility of affiliates within the federation, increase member involvement in association activities, grow the association and strengthen BUILD-PAC, NAHB’s political action committee.
The NAHB membership committee has determined that there are close to 100,000 employees of members’ companies who could take advantage of affiliate membership.
Affiliate membership enables employees of NAHB members’ companies — both builders and associates — to become NAHB members and take advantage of most member benefits, including discounts on NAHB products and services.
The lower dues structure, which reduces affiliate membership from $25 to $5, and the new affiliate representation on the board went into effect March 1. The NAHB Board of Directors approved both measures during the winter meeting at the International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Fla. earlier this year.
Affiliate membership only is available through the local association of the employer’s company and the employer must have at least one associate or builder member of record with active NAHB membership status. To increase the attractiveness of affiliate membership federation-wide, the membership committee is encouraging local associations to lower their affiliate membership dues as well.
Federal Election Commission (FEC) regulations stipulate that only individual members of NAHB can be solicited for BUILD-PAC. In order to satisfy the FEC’s definition of an individual “member,” that member must pay dues to the association or have representation on the association’s governing board. The changes to NAHB affiliate membership now satisfy both FEC criteria and will increase the pool of members eligible to be solicited.
